Diversity

NZ Police and Diversity; 'We Are All The Same, We Are All Different'.

A positive approach to diversity enhances NZ Police in achieving the vision of 'safer communities together'.
Diversity means 'difference' – across race and faith, gender, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity, and age. Diversity recognises that not all people are the same and that people have varied and equally valuable skills, experience and knowledge to offer.
The New Zealand Police Vision Statement for Diversity, 'We are all the same, we are all different', encapsulates this approach.

For NZ Police, Diversity is a golden thread through our key values of Integrity, Professionalism, Respect, and Commitment to Maori and Treaty.

The National Equity and Diversity Office, based at Police National Headquarters in Wellington, works to ensure an inclusive workforce for all employees, and for Police to increasingly reflect the communities it serves.

The Office oversees policy and staff networks related to Diversity in NZ Police which support and foster good practice around Diversity across the country. For example:
  •  Gender (including information on Police District Networks, including Women in Policing and Equity and Diversity Networks)
  • Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (Diversity Liaison Officer Network)
  • Disability (Disability Network, our reports for the New Zealand Disability Strategy)
  • Age (the aging workforce, generational mix)
  •  Ethnicity and Faith (Iwi, Pacific and Asian Liaison Officers and the work of the Maori, Pacific and Ethnic Services office).
