Tasman District Commander, Superintendent Grant O'Fee |
Welcome to the Tasman District Police.
If you were to drive from one end of the Tasman District to the other, from Haast on the West Coast to Kaikoura in the east, it would take 11-and-a-half hours. Here's a map of the district.
Our district is mostly rural, and some areas are very isolated indeed. We also have a large stretch of coastline and several mountain ranges, which means Search and Rescue can be an important part of our work.
Most of our population is based in Nelson, Blenheim, Kaikoura and Greymouth.
There are 22 police stations in the Tasman District. Because of the geographical isolation, six are sole-charge - or one-person - stations. Our district phonebook provides phone, fax and address details for each station.
Sole-charge officers can be responsible for a large area. The Murchison officer's patch, for example, extends in a 100km radius from the town, reaching to the Hope Saddle in the north, Springs Junction in the south and across to Inangahua in the west.
Our aim is to run a smooth, professional policing service. Besides maintaining our response and investigation capability, we are working with our community to deal with at-risk youth, alcohol and violence, and reducing road trauma.
The Tasman District Commander is Superintendent Grant O'Fee. He's based in District Headquarters in Nelson.
Local police news will be posted here soon.
