What services are available to victims of crime?
Department of Courts: Where a Police prosecution occurs the Victim Court Advisers (employed by the Courts) offer free, confidential and professional services to victims of crime who have:
- physical injury;
- suffered emotional harm;
- lost property (or had property damaged);
- suffered the death (or mental incapacity) of a member of their immediate family;
- had their child suffer harm or loss to their property.
Their role is to:
- provide information to victims about the case that relates to them;
- advise victims about their rights in the court process;
- help victims participate in the court system.
A victim advisor will contact you after the defendant’s first appearance in court. Or, you can contact a Victim Adviser through your local court.
Victim Support provides 24-hour emotional support, personal advocacy and information to all people affected by crime and trauma throughout New Zealand.
