Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rules relating to firearms licensing?

Everyone who possesses or uses a firearm needs a New Zealand Firearms Licence, unless they are under the "immediate supervision" of a licence holder.

"Immediate supervision" generally means the licensed or older person is within reach and in control of the person using the airgun. The person providing the supervision must be able to take control of the airgun. They cannot be in possession or control of another firearm or airgun.

The minimum age for a licence holder is 16.

A standard firearms licence allows the holder to have and use sporting type shotguns and rifles. It is valid for 10 years unless revoked or surrendered sooner.

To own and use some firearms you may need a special endorsement. More detailed information is on pages 40-46 of the Arms Code.

A licence is also required by people aged 16 and 17 who wish to possess or use an airgun. Parents should be aware it is an offence to supply or sell an airgun to an unlicensed person under 18, eg as a birthday gift.

Learn more from the Airguns section of the Police website. The penalty for using or possessing a firearm without a licence is a maximum fine of $1000 or 3 months imprisonment.
