Can you have criminal conviction and still work for Police?

You may be able to enter the Police College with minor convictions (eg traffic offences). Applications will not be accepted from people who have convictions for offending in relation to: dishonesty, drugs, sexual offences, violence, and all "drink-drive" offences under the Transport Act.

Applications from people who have convictions outside those listed above may be considered.

Any charge that is proved in the Youth Court or results in diversion or a discharge under s19 of theCriminal justice Act may also be considered.

Backgrounds are considered via our Offence Clearance Process. To begin the Offence Clearance Process you must write a letter of explanation, which is then followed up by an interview with a recruitment staff member.

Decisions will be made by the General Manager, Human Resources, Police National Headquarters.
