I am being stalked/threatened/harassed by my ex/someone. What should I do?

If you are worried that something violent or dangerous may happen, or you fear for your safety, it may be appropriate for police to get involved. 'Criminal harassment' and 'intimidation' are against the law.

In an emergency please dial 111 and ask for police.

Things you can do:
  • See How to deal with domestic violence on our website.
  • Keep a written record including people's names, details, times and dates of events that cause concern. Keep copies of threatening texts or emails but avoid responding to them.
  • Phone or visit your local police station and ask to be put in touch with the District Family Violence Coordinator.
  • Alternatively, send a letter to your local police, outlining your concerns. Include your written record of events. A letter creates a formal record and ensures police will respond to your situation.
  • Seek a protection order from the Family Court. This is a court order to protect people from domestic violence, including physical, sexual and psychological abuse. Contact your lawyer, your Family Court Coordinator, a Community Law Centre, Women's Refuge or the Citizen's Advice Bureau.
'Harassment' is defined and further discussed on the Law Access website.
