How do I apply for a vacancy?
Consider the position requirements:
- three essential competencies
- at least two technical skills
- any special requirements
- any certifications
For each position requirement you need to consider whether you:
- do not meet the requirements
- meet the requirements
- exceed the requirements
To apply, complete:
- an application form (POL 675),
- a letter of application - maximum two pages and
- a chronological CV - maximum eight pages and submit by the closing date.
What is a competency?
A competency describes the behaviours, attitudes and characteristics an individual needs to perform well in the position.

What is competency interview?
A competency interview focuses on eliciting specific examples from the applicant and asks them to describe situations where they have demonstrated the required behaviours. These situations are probed in a systematic way to build up a picture of the relative strengths and weaknesses of the applicant against the essential competencies.

What is a technical skill?
This is the practiced ability required to perform in the position. They allow a person to achieve the purpose and accountabilities of the position by applying their skills and knowledge.
What checks do New Zealand Police carry out?
All successful applicants are required to undergo a full reference and security check prior to any offer of employment.
Who can work at New Zealand Police?
To work at New Zealand Police a person must:
- be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand Residence Permit holder, or
- be an Australian citizen or an Australian resident who holds a current Australian Resident Return Visa.
People may be employed by New Zealand Police on a temporary basis if they:
- have lawful authority to work in New Zealand which includes a Work Permit with conditions that allow the holder to work in the position applied for, or
- have a variation of condition to a Visitor or Student Permit that allows such work.
People in New Zealand on a Working Holiday Scheme Permit are not permitted to take up permanent employment.
