Attacks in France and the US

Attacks in France and the US

Commissioner Mike Bush

Ngā mihi. The deadly terror attack in Nice and the shootings of police officers in the United States have shocked New Zealanders. Our thoughts are with all those whose loved ones were killed or injured in these horrific events.

It has been encouraging to see people in the affected communities, and elsewhere around the world, joining together to remember the victims and take a stand against terror and violence. This is always the best public response to these types of acts.

These incidents are also a reminder of how lucky we are to live in such a peaceful and tolerant nation. I am immensely proud of the extensive efforts our staff put in to build and maintain trust and confidence in Police and foster harmony among our many diverse communities. This is absolutely in keeping with our mission to make New Zealand the safest country.

We are also working hard to prevent the kinds of acts we’ve seen overseas occurring here.

Vice-presidential visit

Congratulations to all staff involved in the police operation around US Vice-President Joe Biden’s visit to New Zealand this week. Visits by high-profile overseas dignitaries always attract considerable media attention and the eyes of the world are on New Zealand Police as we work to ensure they pass without incident.

We have a very proud record in that regard, as we have shown once again this week.

Until next time, stay safe.
