Five of the 22 people killed on North Shore, Waitakere and Rodney Roads in the last year died in crashes where young drivers were driving outside of the terms of their licence.
It is for this reason Police are urging young people to take care on the roads this ball season.
"Young people who have restricted licences need to remember they are not permitted to carry passengers and they are not allowed to drive after 10pm", said North Shore/Waitakere/Rodney Road Policing Manager, Superintendent, Dick Trimble.
"Parents also need to take this message seriously particularly in light of the new road toll statistics that show 20% of fatal deaths were in crashes where teenagers were breaching the terms of their restricted licence."
Police believe it is also timely to remind young drinkers that the alcohol limit for under 20 year old drivers is only 150micrograms per litre of breath.
"That’s a very small amount of liquor, less than half the amount an adult is allowed to drink before breaching the threshold".
"It is advisable that all young people going to balls this season and their parents make safe transport plans before they head out".
"We would also urge people and organisations that are hosting balls and after- ball parties to practise good host responsibility by providing food and non-alcoholic drinks".
