Police warn against new goldcard scam

1 min read

A scam in current circulation is enticing people to apply for a global goldcard. Once a member of the public has filled in their details and forwarded a five dollar fee they receive a global goldcard in the post.

The web site is run from China and Police understand the cards are being dispatched from a South Auckland address.

People are encouraged to transfer an amount of US $200 dollars or more into the card account, says Police E-Crime National Manager Maarten Kleintjes.

Once the person tries to use the goldcard at an ATM, the card does not work. If they contact the card administrators they are told their money has
been donated to charity, says Mr Kleintjes.

If you do receive a scam of this nature please do not respond. If you have responded and transferred any money there will be little chance of getting it
back, Mr Kleintjes says.

Police are publicising the scam to warn the public to steer well clear and for people to avoid being ripped off, Mr Kleintjes says.
