Detectives continue scene examination

Detectives and forensic specialists will be working all day at the Ettrick Street house, scene of yesterday’s double homicide.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Wakelin, who is heading the double homicide inquiry, said the appalling tragedy was of a domestic nature.

"We are still trying to piece together just what happened and what promoted this tragedy.

To this end staff will be talking to family, friends and neighbours again today," he said.

Post mortem examinations will be conducted today Dunedin Hospital.

Police can confirm the man at the central of the investigation is the father of the children and separated from his deceased partner.

The two children, aged 3 and 5 years are in a stable condition and are expected to remain in Dunedin Hospital over the weekend.

The man at the centre of the inquiry remains in a drug induced coma and will have surgery on his legs this afternoon.

Wendy Frances Mercer, aged 34

Will David Mercer, aged 6 months
