Police purchase site for new station

1 min read

Police have purchased the former Farmers Building at 8 Gladstone Road, Gisborne.

Eastern District Commander Superintendent Grant Nicholls said the new site, on the corner of Gladstone Road and Customhouse Street, is an ideal location for Police being within close proximity to the Courts, city centre, arterial routes and main highways.

Mr Nicholls said Police had long since outgrown the current station, which is too small and does not meet the requirements of policing in today’s world.

"Considerable consultation has been undertaken with key partners within the Gisborne District such as Council officers, Historic Places Trust, Iwi, Community groups and surrounding property neighbours.

"It is our intention that the proposed building design and functionality will be in keeping with the present historic façade, surrounding environment and Gisborne cityscape.

"It is anticipated staff will be moving to the new purpose built station towards the end of 2005," said Mr Nicholls.
