Bypass house fire believed to be arson

1 min read

Wellington CIB is appealing for witnesses to an overnight fire which damaged an old house in Tonks Avenue, due for relocation/demolition as part of the inner city bypass.

Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Perry, Wellington CIB, says police conducted a scene examination today and are now treating the fire as arson.

"We believe an accelerant was used to start the fire which destroyed an abandoned car, a carport and part of the house," he says.

Detective Senior Sergeant Perry says police are keen to speak with people who may have seen or heard suspicious activity in the Tonks Avenue area in the early hours of this morning.

Police are not prepared to speculate on who may have been responsible for the fire.

People who have information which might help investigators, are asked to call Constable Antony Callon at Johnsonville Police Station, tel 439 0900.
