Arrest in Huntly incident

1 min read

A man was arrested and faces robbery charges following an incident in Huntly that saw Police establish an armed cordon around an address in the north of the town yesterday afternoon.

The standoff resulted from an earlier incident in Kihikihi when four motorcycles, one estimated to be valued at $60,000, were stolen by a group of men from a motorbike store about 11.20am.

A quantity of clothing was also taken.

Firearms were believed to have been used in the robbery and the offenders fled north in a four-wheel-drive vehicle towing a trailer.

One offender is believed to have ridden off on one of the motorcycles.

An alert to other Police units resulted in the discovery of a vehicle linked to the robbery at a Bailey St, Huntly address shortly after 1pm.

Cordons were established and the Waikato Armed Offenders Squad deployed to the area. Assistance was also provided by the Auckland based Police Eagle Helicopter.

A short time later the scene was secured by Armed Offenders officers allowing the searching of the property and the recovery of one of the motorcycles and items of clothing.

Cordons in the area were lifted shortly before 4pm.

Inquiries into the location of the other motorbikes and those involved are continuing.
