Senior police officer acquitted

1 min read

Police Commissioner Rob Robinson, said that following the acquittal of Kelvin Powell in the Hamilton High Court this afternoon the most important next step was for Kelvin to spend time with his family.

"There's no rush for next steps in regard to employment matters. Once Kelvin has had some family time and when he is ready we will sit down for a chat about the future," said Mr Robinson.

"The last 18 months have been a difficult time for everyone concerned - for the complainant, Kelvin and his family and the police inquiry team.

"The allegations made were very serious and had to be placed before the Court in order for justice to be done."

Mr Robinson said the case had naturally been weighing on the minds of many police staff.

"I'm very proud of the professionalism of staff throughout the organisation but particularly Waikato staff. They have not let the inquiry or the case materially affect their service to the public and I'll be holding meetings with local staff shortly to convey this message and to talk through matters that may be on their minds," said Mr Robinson.
