Getting Behind the White Ribbon

23 November, 2009 - 13:52

Police in Wellington District are looking forward to attending a number of community events on 25 November when they will show support for White Ribbon Day.

Acting District Commander for Wellington, Superintendent Gail Gibson says staff across the district have been working with community organizations in preparation for the day.

"Staff in the Wellington District have been working alongside their local organizations and networks to promote the very important message that violence towards women in any form should not be tolerated.

"Awareness is an important aspect and the public's support at these planned events is to be commended. I look forward to seeing growing numbers in our communities joining with Police and agencies to show their support of White Ribbon Day."

Staff in Wellington's Policing Areas have helped devise different ways to build awareness and support on the day.

Wellington City Police have been working as part of the Te Rito Network to hold a race from Bunny Street to Civic Square in Wellington city.

Approximately 200 men are registered in teams to participate in the race and their workplace name will feature with messages around family violence on sheets hung up in Civic Square.

Kapiti Mana Police and the Porirua Community Family Violence Prevention Network will wait under the Porirua City Centre canopies for 75 men on motorcycles doing a slow ride from Waitangirua, arriving for the opening of the event. Live entertainment will follow, along with a 'Hands On' banner, sausage sizzle and more. The banner display will include the public and Police staff's painted handprints symbolizing 'hands that will never be used in violence'.

Upper Hutt Police Family Violence Co-ordinator, Richard Orr, will run a free BBQ in Upper Hutt. Information stands will feature at Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt shopping malls, staffed by agencies including Police. Local businesses have been asked to display the White Ribbons and posters in their windows as support.

Wairarapa staff will be based near the Masterton Library with a sausage sizzle, art displays, stands and murals. Photos will be taken of men present, supporting the stand against violence to women and children.
