Hamilton man and children face variety of charges following weekend domestic violence incident

1 min read

A Hamilton man and his teenage son and daughter face a variety of charges following the assault on a number of Police staff attending a call at Fairfield address on Saturday morning.

Detective Sergeant Andy BuBear said officers were called to the address about 7.30am after being contacted by Womens' Refuge.

"The property is occupied by one of their clients who resides there with 10 children and an on-site refuge worker.

"The Womens' Refuge worker realised the client's estranged partner was in the house with her and called Police. When officers attended the man has been arrested for breaching a restraining order but managed to jump out a window where he has confronted a female Police officer and assaulted her."

The female officer suffered a head injury in the struggle which deteriorated further when the offender's son and daughter went to their father's aid, assaulting Police.

"Reinforcements were called and pepper spray has had to be used to quell the aggressive offender and the teenagers were arrested for obstruction. The boy's mother was also arrested but released," said Mr BuBear.

"The man was secured in a patrol car while staff tried to calm things down however while secured there the man kicked out one of the patrol car's windows."

Mr BuBear said Saturday's incident highlighted the risks and tensions Police and partner agencies often experience when dealing with family violence related incidents.

"While the level of violence involved in this incident is of concern the fact that the man was able to be removed highlights the strength of the partnership established between Hamilton Police and Womens' Refuge working to resolve such issues."

The man faces charges of aggravated injury, assaulting Police x 2, threatening language, intentional damage, breaching a restraining order and trespass and will be appearing in the Hamilton District Court on a yet to be determined date.
