Post-mortem expected to be carried today out on Meremere body

A post-mortem examination on the skeletal remains of a body discovered in the Waikato River over the weekend is expected to be carried out in Auckland today.

The body was found adjacent to the Meremere Wharf on Saturday morning and after a prolonged recovery operation was transferred to Auckland to await examination.

Clothing found with the remains led Police to a provisional assessment that the body is a woman's however this has yet to be confirmed.

Investigators said it may be some time before a positive identification of the body can be made.
