Young man killed in crash near Porirua

1 min read

A 19-year-old male passenger was killed in the early hours of this morning when the car he was travelling in failed to take a sweeping left hand bend on State Highway 58, on the Pauatahanui side of Haywards Hill.
The 3am crash happened 400 metres east of the intersection of Moonshine Road and SH58 when the driver was heading towards Porirua. The car crossed the road, crashed into a tree and plunged down a bank.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Saunders, Porirua CIB, says the car's driver, another 19-year-old male, was treated in Hutt Hospital for minor injuries but has since been released.
Police are hoping to release the name of the passenger later today.
Detective Sergeant Saunders says initial enquiries indicate that speed may have been a factor in this crash.
