Waikato Police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine what caused the death of a man who died in hospital several hours after a minor vehicle collision.

District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, said the crash happened about 9.20am yesterday, at the intersection of SH3 and Jary Rd, Te Awamutu.

"The crash is currently under investigation by the Waikato Serious Crash Unit and involved two vehicles, one driven by the deceased- a 1989 Mazda Astina and the other a 1989 Volvo car.

"Initial indications on the cause of the crash are that the Mazda turned in front of the southbound Volvo. The driver of the Mazda, 92-year-old Richard Graham UNDERWOOD and his 82-year-old wife were both taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance and he died several hours later."

Mr UNDERWOOD'S death has been reported to the Coroner.
