Police Release Name of Unidentifed Man

Police have identified and released the name of the young man who died after he fell from the Bond Street over bridge at Newton, on Saturday night.

The deceased man's name is:

HEMALOTO/ Paula Tosa

Male

Pacific Islander

Aged 25 years

Resident of Mt Roskill - Auckland.

Police say the incident happened at about 10.40pm on Saturday evening 17 June 2006. The young man was seen walking across a sector of the bridge.

Witnesses reported they then saw the man fall from the bridge into one of the westbound lanes of the North Western motorway, before being struck by an oncoming car.

The man received serious head injuries and died while being transported to hospital by ambulance. The occupants of the vehicle were shaken by the incident, but were otherwise unharmed.

A post mortem was carried out earlier today, and the man's identity was established by Police fingerprint experts. Relatives have been informed.

The young man was unidentified at the time of the incident, and a public request seeking his identity was launched by police.

Two lanes of the North West motorway were closed for about four hours. The Serious Crash Unit is continuing its investigations into the incident.
