Two teenagers were bruised and shaken after they were assaulted and robbed in Whitby, near Porirua, early on Sunday morning.

Constable Greg Murray, Porirua CIB, said the two 18-year-old youths were walking home down Omapere Street, about 12.20am on Sunday when near the intersection with Adventure Drive, Whitby, they were stopped and attacked by a carload of four to five male Maori or Polynesian youths.

"The two victims were severely shaken and ran to a nearby house to call for help," Constable Murray said. "A Nokia 20280 cellphone with a clear front and back cover was taken during the robbery."

The assailants, aged 18 or 19 years, were all of average build and were wearing hoodies with the hoods up or with caps on. The driver of the older style 4-door white or light coloured station wagon was wearing a white hoodie with the hood up.

"We know there were several cars driving through the area at the time of the robbery. We'd like people who saw or heard the commotion, or who know the identities of the people responsible for the attack, to contact Porirua CIB."

The number is 04 238 1400.
