Police arrest driver involved in fatal driveway incident

Police have arrested the driver of the vehicle which hit an elderly man in Mangere on Saturday 4 June resulting in his death.

The incident occurred in a private driveway outside a residence on Vine Street in Mangere at around 10pm.

The deceased is 72 year-old Sione Lauano of Otahuhu. He died in hospital on Sunday 5 June.

The driver, a 21 year-old male, appeared in Manukau District Court yesterday charged with assault. Further charges are pending an ongoing Police investigation.

He did not enter a plea and has been remanded in custody until 27 June. He has been granted name suppression until Wednesday 15 June.

Police are conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the events leading up to the incident and are speaking with a number of witnesses.
