Home invasion victim expresses thanks

The young man who was beaten in a home invasion early on Wednesday 1 August has expressed his thanks to well wishers and acknowledges their support and best wishes. He is now being supported by Victim Support.

He has told police he is grateful and appreciative and does not see the attack as reflective of New Zealand society. He has lived in New Zealand for five years and will be continuing his studies here.

Detective Sergeant Scott Anderson says the inquiry is continuing and asks anyone with any information to contact him at the Hornby Police Station phone 3441800.

"We now believe that one if the assailants had both eyebrows shaved off and had very pale skin," he says.

At about 5.00am, Wednesday 1 August, the 22 year old Chinese student answered a knock at the door of his flat. Three masked males forced their way into the house and started assaulting him with bottles.

Detective Sergeant Anderson said that information indicates that the attack was racial, as a number of derogatory comments were made to the victim during the attack and the offenders left without taking any property.

The victim suffered minor cuts and bruising and did not require hospitalization.

Police are looking for 3 European males with shaven heads aged between 17-23 years in relation to the attack.
