Hamilton Police are seeking the public's help in identifying a suspicious smoker, caught on security camera footage trying doors in central Hamilton yesterday.

City Tactical Coordinator, Senior Sergeant Freda Grace, said Police became aware of the offender's activities thanks to a security system installed at a Maeroa address.

"The home owner contacted us yesterday and advised us he had CCTV footage clearly showing the man as he walked up the driveway, moved around the outside of the house twice trying the doors before leaving the way he had come.

"The male Maori appears to be aged in his early twenties and was wearing jandals, dark blue or black three quarter pants, a black, grey and white chequered jacket with a blue hooded sweatshirt with yellow writing and a symbol on it underneath the jacket."

Ms Grace said the man was wearing a reversed blue cap on his head and had a cigarette in his mouth while he was on the property.

"This man's behaviour was certainly suspicious and we're very grateful for the quality of images supplied by the man's security system.

"This is not the first time members of the public have been able to assist us with hi-resolution images of offenders and we're hoping by publishing these pictures we will be equally successful in identifying the man."

Anyone who recognises the man or who has information on his identity is asked to contact Ms Grace at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
