Paeroa standoff release 2

09 October 2008

Investigators are returning to the scene of yesterday's standoff outside Paeroa where an emotionally disturbed man attacked his mother and threatened Police with a knife.

SH26, near the intersection with Ryall Rd was closed for about three hours as Police tried to negotiate with the man to come out.

When negotiations failed and the man's mother, who had locked herself in a bedroom, managed to escape, members of the Waikato Armed Offenders Squad fired tear gas into the house to coerce the man out and he was arrested.

The 23-year-old man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and may face further charges dependent on the results of a psychiatric assessment.

The man's mother was treated at a local medical centre suffering what is described as a moderate head wound resulting from a blow from what Police believe was an iron bar.
