Fatal road crash near Wanganui

1 min read

Police believe the occupants of two cars driving on SH3 this morning, just south of Wanganui, may have information which would assist in a fatal road crash investigation.

Shortly after 7am a dark-coloured Honda being driven towards Wanganui and a dark-coloured Holden being driven in the opposite direction collided head-on at Marybank.

The driver of the Honda, a woman in her late 50s died following the crash. The driver of the Holden, also a woman, is being treated for serious injuries.

Enquiries so far suggest that two other cars were driving in the direction of Palmerston North in front of the Holden just before the crash happened. It is believed the occupants may be able to provide police with vital information about the crash, or the manner in which the cars involved were driving before they collided.

The road was closed for some time for a scene examination to be carried out, with traffic diverted through Fordell.

Witnesses, or anyone with information relevant to the investigation, are asked to contact Sgt Colin Wright at Wanganui Police on 06 349 0600.
