Man Charged in Relation to Stabbing

Dunedin Police today charged a 50-year-old man with murder in relation to the death of a 21-year-old woman in a stabbing incident in St Kilda, Dunedin, on Monday night.

The man remains in a stable condition in Dunedin Hospital.

The accused man is to appear before a Justice of the Peace tomorrow in a court room convened at Dunedin Public Hospital.

Police will be seeking a remand in custody.

Police today named the 21-year-old woman as Moana Anahera Marie Aranui of Dunedin.

A post-mortem completed last evening confirmed that she suffered multiple stabbing wounds, one of which penetrated the heart and was fatal, Detective Senior Sergeant Steve McGregor said.

Ms Aranui's body has been released to the family this afternoon, he said.

Police would be completing their investigations at the scene tomorrow morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant McGregor extended his thanks to members of the public who came forward with valuable information in relation to the incident.
