A young child has been killed and four people injured following a collision between a truck and trailer unit and a four wheel drive west of Hamilton this afternoon.

The crash happened on SH39 about 4.30pm and while Serious Crash Unit staff are still carrying out their scene examination initial indications are that the crash occurred when the north bound truck and trailer unit crossed the centreline into the path of the 4x4.

Four people suffering minor to moderate injuries were transported to Waikato Hospital by St John Ambulance.

It is understood three of the injured were from the same family as the dead child while the fourth person is the driver of the truck.

No further details are currently available on the injured, further information will be released tomorrow.

At this time SH39 (Kakaramea Rd) remains closed and is expected to be so for several hours while the examination is completed and salvage vehicles recover the tractor and trailer unit.

Diversions for southbound traffic are in place at Finlayson Rd while northbound traffic is being diverted on to Ngahinapouri Rd.
