Man runs brother

1 min read

A Hamilton man who claims he drove his vehicle into a group of people in an attempt to save his brother from a beating instead ended up running his sibling over.

Police were called to the suburb of Enderley about 8.30pm on Saturday night after reports a person had been run over by a car at a party on Eliot St.

Initial indications are that the 27-year-old driver had been drinking at the address with his brother when they were asked to leave due to their level of intoxication.

The man has left in vehicle, driven round neighbouring streets before returning to the address where he is alleged to have stopped his car then driven towards a woman, pinning her against a fence.

He is then said to have chased several people into an adjacent empty property then when able to drive any further, tried to reverse out, hitting his brother.

With the brother rolling out from under the front of the vehicle the man then drove off and was stopped a short later by Police on nearby Mardon Rd.

In explanation the driver said he drove his vehicle in such a manner to try and stop his brother being beaten up by the group.

The man's brother was taken to Waikato Hospital and treated for superficial injuries.

The driver now faces charges of assaulting a person with a weapon and driving dangerously, causing injury.

Further charges are likely.
