Pursuit ends in Hamilton pair's arrest

1 min read

Officers policing rural arterial routes around Hamilton's outskirts needed little further justification of their efforts than a stolen car they encountered being driven at outrageous speeds on wet, busy roads.

Waikato Road Policing Manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, said the officers working on Operation Ladder first encountered the car near the Matangi Village heading towards Tauwhare Rd about 2pm.

'It was recorded as driving at 94km/h in an 80km/h zone, when the officer went to pull the vehicle over the driver has accelerated away with speeds recorded between 140-150km/h as it eventually turned back towards Hamilton via SH26.

"Managed by the Police Northern Communications Centre the pursuit headed towards the City with the car reported passing other cars in wet conditions at speeds in excess of 150km/h."

Encountering more Police as he entered the City the driver attempted to turn off SH26 road at the intersection of Berkley Ave and Morrinsville Rd but lost control, crashing into a power generation box.

"The three occupants of the car attempted to flee through various neighbouring properties but officers were greatly assisted by members of the public who directed chasing officers to the location of two while a third remains at large.

"A 24-year-old man and a 16-year-old male youth were arrested on Mullane St, the car, a Silver Subaru Legacy stolen the night before from a Tristram St address, suffered moderate damage," said Mr Tooman.
