Van driver sought for hit and run

1 min read

Wellington Police are appealing for public help in finding the driver of a van involved in a hit and run accident in Newtown on Tuesday night.

A 30-year-old woman cyclist was injured in the accident which happened just after 7pm on Tuesday, 3 June, at the intersection of Constable and Owen Streets.

The woman was treated overnight in Wellington Hospital for concussion, a broken hand and rib injuries after the force of the crash sent her flying into the van’s windscreen and then onto the ground. Her bike was wrecked.

Constable Brendon Gerrish, Wellington Road Policing Group, says the van, believed to be a creamy white colour, and possibly a long wheel based 1980s model, was travelling east on Constable Street. The cyclist was travelling down the hill and was struck as the van turned right into Owen Street just outside the dairy.

&#34Witnesses have told us the van driver stopped, got out to check what had happened and then indicated he would move the van to stop it from blocking traffic.

&#34He got back in the van and then drove off,&#34 Constable Gerrish says. &#34We want to find the driver and the van.

&#34We’d also like to hear from other members of the public who witnessed the crash.&#34

The cyclist is recovering from her injuries and appreciates the help from people who went to her aid.

If you have information which can help, please called Constable Gerrish, Wellington Road Policing Group, at Wellington Central on tel 381 2000.
