Police can confirm that the body located in the Orakei Reserve in Okahu Bay on Saturday was that of 36-year-old Socksay Chansy.
Mr Chansy recently returned to New Zealand after a long period living overseas.
Police are now appealing for sightings of Mr Chansy who was last seen in Auckland on April 25 in Grafton, before his body was found on Saturday.
"Mr Chansy was estranged from his family and we believe he had been living and sleeping rough in the central Auckland area in the days or weeks following his last confirmed sighting on April 25," says Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Newman.
"We're hoping that by releasing his photo someone will recognise him and may be able to let us know if they had seen him in Auckland since April 25."
Mr Chansy's post mortem examination was yesterday however further tests will be required before a cause of death is determined.
"We're continuing to treat his death as unexplained. The inquiry is focusing on the Orakei and Mission Bay area, with a view to identifying people who have been sleeping in the reserves and may have seen or come into contact with Mr Chansy," says Detective Senior Sergeant Newman.
"We're very interested to hear from anyone who had dealings with Mr Chansy and who can shed some light on his movements these past few months."
