Those out and about on the water across Auckland this Labour weekend may be surprised to see a member of our Police Maritime Unit up close and personal as we deploy our new Jet Ski.

The Jet Ski (pictured) will allow the officer operating the PWC (personal watercraft) to get closer to boaties as well as be used for community engagement around the importance of staying safe on the water.

Inspector Dave Hines of the Police Maritime Unit says Police want our community to enjoy the long weekend but we also want to ensure that everyone is taking all the necessary precautions.

“It’s really easy to make sure you stay safe on the water. It’s all about being prepared, making sure you’ve done all the necessary checks on your boat and that you have the appropriate gear on board. That is lifejackets and reliable forms of communications equipment.”

“We also urge all boaties to ensure that you fully understand the ‘road rules’ of the water’. So have a great weekend out there, be sensible and if you see Deodar or our officer out on the Jet ski then say hello, we will be doing our best to keep you safe on the water but need everyone to take responsibility,” says Inspector Hines.
