Nelson Police are investigating a car fire on State Highway 6 on the Whangamoa Saddle this afternoon.
The fire service was alerted to the fire about 2pm. The car was located about 30 metres over a bank off the highway fully engulfed.
Police have confirmed there is a deceased person inside the vehicle.
The circumstances surrounding the fire and how the car came to be over the bank are as yet unexplained.
The vehicle will remain where it is overnight with a scene guard in place. A further detailed scene examination will take place tomorrow.
