Body of missing hunter recovered from Lake Sumner area of Canterbury

1 min read

Canterbury Police SAR have led an operation this week to locate a lone hunter who was reported overdue from a hunting trip this weekend.

The hunter was due to return home at lunchtime on Sunday.  Family members alerted Police yesterday lunchtime when the hunter had still not returned home.  Canterbury Police SAR undertook an aerial search of the area the hunter was understood to have been in yesterday and a body was located late last night.  Due to diminishing light conditions it was unsafe to continue the recovery operation last night.

Canterbury Police SAR returned to the area today and a body was recovered, by helicopter.  Formal identification has confirmed this to be the missing hunter.

The death has been referred to the Coroner who will determine cause of death.  No details of the missing hunter will be released until the process to inform next of kin has been completed.

Canterbury Police investigations are continuing.
