Body recovered from Okuru River, Haast following crash

A 44 year old man  from Hannah’s Clearing, Haast has died after his vehicle crashed off a steep bank and gone into the Okuru River, Haast.

The  car was found by a passing jet boater on Wednesday afternoon and a subsequent search and rescue effort was initiated.

The deceased man was located in the river approximately 1km downstream from his vehicle today, and has been recovered.  His death has been referred to the Coroner.

Police would like to thank Land SAR trained volunteers from Fox Glacier and Haast for all of their help, as well as the Haast community.

We would also like to pass on our condolences to the family at this time.
