Body recovered from river identified

A man's body that was recovered from the Whanganui River yesterday has been identified as Jayden Tilby aged 24 of Whanganui.

Preliminary post mortem results suggest Mr Tilby drowned. Police is treating the death at this stage as unexplained.

A large canoe was also found floating in the Whanganui River on the afternoon of Saturday 24 January, 2015 in the vicinity of the City Bridge/Putiki areas.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Phil Taylor of the Whanganui Police says: "Inquiries are continuing in relation to the circumstances surrounding Mr Tilby’s death. Mr Tilby was last seen at about 9am on Saturday 24 January, 2015 in Wilson Street on his bicycle, and his movements after that time remain unclear."

"We want to speak to anyone who saw him after 9am or noticed the canoe floating in the river on the Saturday."

Mr Tilby’s bike is described as a silver adult bicycle.
