Body recovered from Whanganui River

Whanganui Police have launched an investigation after a man's body was recovered from the Whanganui River, near Aramoho at approximately 6:30am today.

A member of the public saw the body and contacted emergency services. The body was recovered shortly after officers attended the scene.

Inquiries are underway to confirm the man's identity and to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

A post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow at the Palmerston North Hospital.

As a mark of respect, local iwi have placed a rahui on the lower section of the Whanganui River below Mosquito Point. The rahui will be in place from 3pm on Tuesday,  27 January, 2015, until 3pm on Wednesday, 28 January, 2015. Local iwi ask people to refrain from fishing in the river or use it for recreational activities while the rahui is in effect.
