Police can confirm a 19-year-old man has died after getting in to difficulties while swimming in Kawarau River this afternoon.
Earlier reports that the man was recovered from Lake Dunstan were incorrect.
A second person who also got into difficulty made it to shore safely.
Emergency services were called to the incident just after 1pm. The area off Cairnmuir Road, Bannockburn, is popular for swimming. The weather was warm at the time with light winds.
Police offer their sympathies to the friends and family of the deceased at this tragic time.
