Child struck by vehicle - update

1 min read

Counties Manukau Police Serious Crash Unit are investigating an incident where a 2 year old girl was struck by a reversing vehicle in a driveway in Mangere at around 10am this morning.

Police and other emergency services were called by a neighbour, and the child was transported to Middlemore hospital with serious injuries.  She is in the expert care of Critical Care doctors and is currently considered to be in a stable condition.

Attending officer Sergeant Kylie Newton of Counties Manukau Police says the incident is tragic and regrettable.  "The girl was playing with siblings near to the driveway and was subsequently struck by the car.  Police are in the process of interviewing family members to determine how the incident occurred.

"Police remind everyone to be mindful of the whereabouts of children at all times, particularly when driving.  Always check around the back of your car before you reverse and ensure children are well out of the way or inside."

An investigation by the Serious Crash Unit is underway and Victim Support is currently assisting the family.
