Community rallies around injured tourists

1 min read

The community of New Zealand is rallying around for two German tourists who were attacked in Whakatane this morning with an overwhelming number of calls to the police offering donations and accommodation for the couple.

In order to free up the telephone line to the police station, anyone wanting to send a message or offer of support is asked to do this via email. The email address that has been organised to collate these messages is ebop.cib@police.govt.nz.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident that occurred in the early hours of this morning near the skatepark in Whakatane and they have recovered items that are believed to have been weapons used in the assault. For investigative reasons police are not prepared to confirm what these items are.

The 18-year-old German woman has suffered facial and arm injuries including fractures and the 19-year-old German man has suffered bruising, lacerations and has lost some teeth. Both have been able to speak directly with family back in Europe. They have been advised of media interest and at this stage they have stated they do not wish to make any comment either directly or via the police.

Four people (3 male and 1 female) are being spoken to by police and a fifth person is still being sought.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Whakatane Police on 07 308 5255. Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
