At 4:55am today police were advised of a serious crash on State Highway 3 at Kaitoke, South of Whanganui.
The crash involves two vehicles which appear to have collided head on.
An 18yr old female driver of one vehicle, and a 47 yr old male driver of the other vehicle have both died at the scene.
Helicopters from Wellington, Palmerston North and New Plymouth have transported 3 passengers to various hospitals in a serious condition.
State Highway 3, at Kaitoke is expected to be closed for sometime as the Police Serious crash unit carries out an investigation into the cause of the crash.
Details of the deceased will not be released until next of kin have been notified.
