Eastern Bay of Plenty mobility scooter fatality

The Bay of Plenty serious crash unit is currently investigating a fatal crash which occurred in Whakatane on Saturday the 7th of May at 12:30pm.

The crash involved a 93-year–old woman who was riding a mobility scooter on the footpath, at the same time a vehicle was exiting a driveway of a residential property on Tuhoe Avenue.

The 93-year-old was knocked off her scooter and taken to Whakatane hospital.

Unfortunately the rider passed away from injuries sustained in the crash.  Police extend their sympathies to the deceased’s family.

The name of the deceased will be released once next-of-kin have been advised.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Whakatane Police station on (07) 308 5255.

This serves as a reminder for all drivers that when exiting driveways to ensure the path is clear before reversing.
