Extreme winds hampering West Coast traffic

1 min read

Police are advising motorists on parts of the West Coast to delay travel if possible.

Extremely high winds are causing havoc on the roads, with three camper vans and one caravan toppled near Hokitika, Mount Hercules, Harihari and Westport this morning.

State Highway 6 from Hokitika south is at risk of closure and roofs have been lifted in both Westport and Greymouth.

Tasman District Command Centre Senior Sergeant Stu Koefoed says people should avoid travel, if at all possible, and secure trampolines and outdoor furniture.
