Fatal crash in road works closes Waikato road for several hours

1 min read

Waikato Police are warning motorists a rural link road joining SH1 with SH2 will be closed for several hours following a fatal collision in an area of road works around midday.

Detective Sergeant Dave Grace of the Waikato District Command Centre said emergency services were called to Island Block Rd, Meremere about 11.58am.

"We're working to establish the circumstances of what has occurred but it appears a road contracting vehicle has collided with a motorcyclist as the larger vehicle was reversing in an area of road works subject to a 30km/h speed restriction.

"The motorcyclist has suffered fatal injuries in the collision and the matter is now subject to a number of investigations including those by the Police's Serious Crash and Commercial Vehicle Investigation Units and WorkSafe NZ."

Mr Grace said the road is expected to be closed for several hours.

"At this point in time it is too early to comment on other factors related to the crash but what we can say is this is the tenth fatality on Waikato roads this year and Police are urging all road users to exercise caution on their travels, particularly in areas controlled by temporary speed restrictions."
