1 min read

Police have confirmed a female motorist has died after a collision between a car and a wide-load trailer moving a house on State Highway 1 south of Ashburton this morning.

The crash occurred at Winslow, between Tinwald and Hinds, at around 10.45am today [Friday 6 December].

The trailer was transporting a house southwards on SH1 and was accompanied by pilot vehicles at front and rear.

The deceased was the driver and sole occupant of a car travelling north on SH1. Police say initial enquiries indicate the vehicle has driven directly into the house trailer. The driver died at the scene.

No further information about the deceased is available at this time.

Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are continuing. Ashburton Police are speaking to witnesses, and are appealing for the driver of a green Subaru station wagon, seen driving south through the area just prior to the crash, to contact their nearest police station, as they may be able to help with enquiries.

The police serious crash unit and commercial vehicle investigation unit are attending at the scene.

The State Highway is closed at Winslow. Diversions have been put in place through Long Beach Road, Boundary Road and Lynford Road. Diversions are expected to remain in place for several hours.
