Fox Glacier recovery on hold due to weather

1 min read

Rescue crews are again unable to get on to Fox Glacier this morning to continue the recovery operation at the site of Saturday’s helicopter crash.

Inspector John Canning said a break in the weather of at least two hours would be required to progress the recovery.

He said Police were not overly optimistic of that happening today, however the weather forecast looks more positive for Wednesday.

Alpine Cliff Rescue and victim identification teams are ready to deploy as soon as that opportunity arises.

Police have been advised that the glacier is unstable and moving up to a metre a day which could impact the operation.

Post mortem examinations will take place this morning in Christchurch on the victims recovered so far.
