French tourists assaulted

1 min read

Hawke's Bay Police are investigating an attack on two French tourists in a carpark in Napier last night.

The couple, both aged 22, were in their van in the Whakarire Ave carpark at the end of Westshore Beach about 10.45pm last night when they were approached by a female and male Maori who asked for a cigarette lighter.

Shortly afterwards the female produced a pistol and the male a baseball bat.  A scuffle ensued which resulted in the male tourist being pistol-whipped.

The tourists tried to alert nearby houses by sounding the van's horn.  This scared the offenders off and the victims went to a nearby house to call police.  The male tourist received injuries to his eye and his cheek and the female was unharmed.

Detective Mike Signal said police were seeking the public's help to identify the offenders, who were driving a silver Subaru Legacy or similar type of vehicle.

"We're very keen to hear from anyone who may know anything about this attack and who was involved.  This was a cowardly and despicable act on two innocent tourists who were enjoying a visit to Hawke's Bay.  They are understandably very shaken by their ordeal."

Mr Signal said the couple arrived in New Zealand in September for a working holiday.  They speak little English and police are using interpreters to help interview them.

Anyone who has information about the attack should contact Detective John McGregor at Napier Police on 06 8310700 or information can be left anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
