Gas Leak in Christchurch

1 min read

Emergency services were alerted to a ruptured gas pipe at the intersection of Barbadoes St and Moorhouse Ave in Christchurch at approximately 1.09pm today.  Experts are currently working to isolate the leak and turn off gas mains in the area.

Adjacent properties between Fitzgerald Ave and the leak (including Marian College) are being evacuated as a safety precaution.  Train activity in the area has also been suspended as a safety precaution.

Police cordons, road closures and diversions are in place.

• Moorhouse Ave is currently closed between Madras St and Fitzgerald Ave.
• Barbadoes St is closed between Saint Asaph St and Moorhouse Ave.
• Waltham Rd is closed from Moorhouse Ave to Byron St.

Police do not rule out further road closures as a precaution due to the prevailing winds in the area.

There are likely to be delays for some time and Police ask the public to avoid the area where possible.

Further updates will be posted on this website as the situation develops
